Watch M.I.A.'s New Video "Born Free" (NSFW!!!)
M.I.A.'s politicking never goes unnoticed, but there's something so disturbing about this video it makes one ponder to what lengths can an artist go before their message is overshadowed by that message's vessel. But the other side of that is that this video isn't nearly as senseless as the genocide it's mocking. Yeah, of course the video is violent and offensive, but why get up in arms over this and not about real-life atrocities committed in the third world? Maybe something like this is what it takes for listeners to actually listen to what she has to say.

I honestly think its just a reflection of the director. I mean, if M.I.A. would have asked Quentin Tarantino to direct the video, would we have expected anything less than this grotesque display? For me, an article in LA Times put it into perspective and on top of this a previous video by Gavras for the song "Swear" by Justice caused it to make more sense. Although not as brutal and just flat out gross, there are many similar styles if you compare the two videos. Yes, she probably could have reflected more on the song since as you watch you tend to only use eyes not ears, but if the sole purpose was her way of not "court[ing] [to] the mainstream", then kudos M.I.A., it so far has seemed to work.
